Summary

[edit]
Description This member of the large Zingiberaceae family grows naturally from Peru to Argentina in wet forests. Where other heliconia have upward facing flowers, Lobster Claw's face down. The greenish yellow flowers provide a rich source of nectar for birds and are especially favourites with hummingbirds. The hummingbirds provide pollination services in return. The Lobster Claw, known in Bolivia as pataju, is one of two national flowers of Bolivia. The other is the kantuta.
