[edit]DescriptionLoading gauge profile vehicle for South Australian Railways 500 class locomotives, 1926 (NRM 17-336-mb-b21-d15).jpg |
English: In readiness for the arrival, in mid-1926, of three classes of locomotives ordered by Railways Commissioner William Webb – considerably bigger than any previous locomotive – the South Australian Railways prepared a loading gauge vehicle to test the ability of the new arrivals to get past platforms and other potential obstructions. The 500 class 4-8-2 was the largest of the locomotives, so this vehicle simulated the outermost points of its outline. On the left of the photo is the cab, to the right the cylinders, and at the top front the smokestack. The vehicle, which was towed, was photographed at Adelaide railway station. |
