La llama es el pariente sudamericano del camello, aunque no tiene joroba. Es un animal muy fuerte que fue domesticado por los habitantes de los Andes. Sus parientes salvajes son los guanacos y las vicuñas. Los indígenas las usaron durante siglos como animales de carga, pudiendo soportar entre 23 y 34 kilogramos y recorrer con ese peso hasta 32 kilómetros en un solo día. Un séquito de llamas, que puede estar formado por varios cientos de individuos, puede transportar un gran volumen de carga a lo largo de las duras cordilleras andinas. Son complacientes animales de carga pero hasta cierto punto. Si una llama está sobrecargada, simplemente se negará a moverse. A menudo se tumba en el suelo y escupe, silba y da patadas a su dueño hasta que aligera el peso. Las llamas pastan en la hierba y, al igual que las vacas, regurgitan la comida y la rumian. Mastican la hierba durante un tiempo antes de tragarla para hacer la digestión completa. Pueden sobrevivir comiendo diferentes tipos de plantas y necesitan muy poca agua. Estas características las convierten en un animal fuerte y seguro incluso en terrenos montañosos poco densos. Este animal es útil para el hombre no sólo en relación con el transporte. Se puede elaborar cuero con su piel y su lana es utilizada para fabricar cuerdas, alfombras y otros tejidos. El excremento de las llamas se seca y quema para hacer combustible. Incluso una vez muertas pueden ser de utilidad para sus dueños: su carne es comestible. |
