Description

Lizard tracks (modern) on loose gypsum sand surface in Utah, USA.

White Mountain, in western Utah's Black Rock Desert, has a small gypsum sand dune field. The sand is derived from a nearby playa, an ephemeral body of water that is usually dry. When water evaporates, dissolved minerals precipitate out. The White Mountain area is a smaller version of the White Sands region of New Mexico, where an extensive gypsum dune field occurs.

The markings on the gypsum sand surface seen here are footprints and a tail drag mark from a lizard.

Locality: eolian gypsum sand dunes, White Mountain, ~4.9 miles west-northwest of the town of Meadow, Black Rock Desert, eastern Millard County, western Utah, USA (vicinity of 38° 54' 55.13" North latitude, 112° 29' 32.41" West longitude)
