Description
Русский: Оценки размера Livyatan melvillei, вымершего макрораптораильного кашалотового, в сравнении с современным кашалотом (Physeter macrocephalus).
• Livyatan был описан в 2010 году и известен только по одному черепу, MUSM 1676. Три Livyatan представляют собой разные оценки размера, основанные на различных животных из подсемейства Physeteroidea. Livyatan оценивается в 13,5 м в длину при расчётах на основе кашалотов и между 16,2 и 17,5 м при основе на вымерших Zygophyseter[1][2].
• Физиологически зрелые самцы кашалотов достигают примерно 16 м в длину[3], однако известно, что некоторые самцы достигают и больших размеров. Сообщается, что один самец, измеренный в 1950 году, достигал 20,7 м в длину[4][5][6]. Существуют разногласия по поводу самцов, приближающихся к длине в 24 м, достигающих или превышающих неё[6][7].
