Description
English:
Livingstone steamer, Congo, ca. 1902-1915
Black and white lantern slide showing the S.S Livingstone, the steamer belonging to the Congo Balolo Mission. The steamer is docked at the bank of a river, and several Congolese passengers or workers can be seen on board. The S.S Livingstone was normally used as a passenger ferry, and travelled between Kinshasa (formerly Leopoldville) and Brazzaville on the Congo River. The ship was built in Ireland. In a New Zealand newspaper in 1902, the Southland Times, it was reported that Dr Harry Grattan Guinness declared on a visit to Australia that: "It is a double-decker, has a stern paddle and only draws 2ft 6in when drawn up to 20 tons, so that it is eminently suitable for the navigation of Central African rivers, which are so frequently cumbered with sand banks. The engines are 200 horse-power, and at the trial trip a speed of 11 A1/4 miles per hour was developed, with wood for fuel. We paid APS5600 for hera|a A second S.S Livingstone came into use in 1914. This slide comes from a collection generated by missionaries working for the Congo Balolo Mission, a mission begun in 1889 under the supervision of the East London Training Institute for Home and Foreign Missions that developed into the interdenominational evangelical mission Regions Beyond Missionary Union after 1900.
