Webuild on the past, and all the centuries of turmoil andtravail which have gone before have made this momentpossible. There has never been any such thing as thefall of man ; for the march of the race has been a con-tinual climb—a movement onward and upward. Wereit not for Coleridge and Bentham, we could not havehad Buckle, Wallace and Spencer, for the minds ofmen would not have been prepared to give them ahearing. Half the battle is in catching the Speakerseye, said Thomas Brackett Reed; and a John theBaptist to prepare the way is always necessary.
