They only need to move their sticks aboutin the air, for every unhappy fly which they touch, is instantlycaught. The boys pick them of? the sticks, pull off their wings,and drop them helpless into a basket. When they have enough,they go home, and the unfortunate Dragon Flies are fried in oilwith onions, and end their career on the supper table. It is no more than fair, to be sure, that creatures who havespent their lives in eating other live insects, should at last them-selves be eaten, but I dont want to punish them for their greedi-ness in that way, do you ? One of the Dragon Flies is so pretty and graceful that it iscalled the Demoiselle Dragon Fly. THE LITTLE HUNTER. A fierce little fellow he is, too, and as wary and wise in hisway as any of the big hunters you read of who set traps, digpitfalls, spread nets, or follow up with a gun. IN FEATHERS AND FUR. 205 Hes a very slow fellow to get about; indeed, some people sayhe cant go any way except backwards, and hed starve to death ifhe depended on his speed, especially as his favorite food consists ofants — about as lively little fellows as I know of. But the littlehunter is far too wise to lose his dinner by expecting to catch it onthe run. He sets a trap—that is to say, he digs a deep pit, withsteep sides, and when it is done, he buries himself at the bottomof it, with, only his jaws sticking out. See him in the picture.There he waits for his game, and he has not long to wait either, forgenerally in a few minutes some thoughtless little fellow, huntingfor food, looks over the edge of the pit to see if possibly some nicebit of meat might be there.
