Text Appearing Before Image:
e. Hesails off on the air, a gay, dancing fly. You know I told you he was rather greedy when he lived inthe little house down under the water. Well, I think he was notso much to blame for eating as much as he could, after all; forwhat he had then was the last mouthful he ever ate. You can hardly believe it, but you would in a minute, if youcould see him with the help of a microscope. For with all his fourgauzy wings, and splendid great eyes, he has no mouth. Of course, he hasnt the least desire to eat. He just flies overthe water, or runs about on it, as, no doubt, youve often seen him,for a few hours, and then dies—of old age. Before the Mamma Caddice Fly dies, however, she is carefulto go down under water, and glue her odd little green eggs to somewater-plant, so that they will be sure to hatch out into soft littleworms, such as she was herself before she got her wings. And these curious little creatures, who have such wonderfullives, are not an inch long. IN FEATHERS AND FUR. 175
Text Appearing After Image:
THE SPIDER SPEAKS FOR HERSELF. I suppose you think we Spiders are nobodies because we goabout quietly minding our own business, neither flaunting in gay 176 LITTLE FOLKS colors, like Madame Butterfly, nor making noise enough to crazeone, like Mr. Humble-Bee. But I can tell you the Arachnida familyis more ancient than the Human family, who take on so many airs, prying into our secrets with that impertinent little microscope oftheirs. However, were an honest and industrious family, and theresnothing about us to be ashamed of. In fact, I could show you somewonderful things, if your eyes were not too coarse to See them. There are my spinnerets, which spin out a beautiful silk rope ofmore than four thousand threads, as fast as I want it. Wouldntyou children think it fine if you could make a rope in a minute anytime you wanted it? Then youve never seen my combs ; you cant—theyre toosmall. I have one on each foot, and I use them to keep myself freefrom dust, as well as my web. I dont like to
