THE BABIES THAT LIVE IN A BALL. Isnt that a droll place to live ?—And the ball not so big as acroquet ball, and six or eight, or more, little pink mouse babiesinside! Of course theyre not so big as the baby at your house. Infact the mother herself weighs only one sixth of an ounce, and isnthalf so big as the little brown mouse you sometimes see, scuddingbehind a box in the pantry, or scampering over the floor in theattic. 8 LITTLE FOLKS She isnt brown like a common mouse either ; she is reddish onthe back, and soft silky white on the under part of the body. Herears are rather short, and on the whole she is an elegant littlecreature. How such an atom of a builder manages to weave this beauti-ful ball, of narrow grasses, hang it firmly to the wheat straws, andput her babies in,—and above all, how she contrives to get in andfeed them, when the whole ball is just stuffed with babies, as tightas sardines in a box,—is what even the wise men dont know yet, forshes very shy, and dont li
