elves, and though some peopledeny that it is true, others of the best and most reliable authoritiesinsist that it is a fact; so I think we may venture to believe it. There are many different kinds of animals, from the monsterGorilla to the pretty little Marmoset, that are vulgarly calledmonkeys, but they are brought—in the big books—under onename, Quadrumana, which means four handed. Here is a picture of another variety of this family Prettylooking fellows, arnt they? The little one seems to be taking alecture of some sort, but I dont think he cares much about it.These monkeys — Long-nosed Monkeys, they are called—look somuch like human beings, that the natives of the Malay Islands saythey are men who have run into the woods to avoid paying taxes. Mr. Wallace says they are about the size of a three years oldchild, and the nose is longer than any mans nose. They live inthe trees, and are very wild. The Islanders also say that when jumping about among the IN FEATHERS AND FUR. 5i

branches these creatures take their nose in one hand, to prevent itsbeing hurt by the branches. They are a very pretty color, a bright chestnut red, relievedby golden yellow. Here is another of the family, rather more interesting thanthe long-nosed gentry. It is the Marmoset, and is found inSouth America. It is not much larger than a squirrel, and isquite as graceful and cunning in its ways. It lives on insects andfruits, and spends its time in the branches of trees. It is socialin its ways, being always found in small troops in the woods. 52 LIIILE FOLKS
