Whether veneer-ed with the most precious woods, inlaidwith ivory, &c. painted, gilded, or var-nished, no cost or labour is spared torender every article of furniture exqui-sitely beautiful; but in the decoration ofour houses, as in that of our persons, wemay be led too far, and in coveting splen-dour, overlook utility. The workman-ship displayed in cabinets, caddies, chairs,and fashionable tables, for regularity,taste, and polish, is incomparable, andclaims admiration ; but, though fascinatedby outward ornament, let us not be blindto useful simplicity. Inlaid satin-wood may hold the superi-ority for a time; but the plainer, morelasting and serviceable materials, of solidoak, noble mahogany, durable walnut, andhumble deal, will ever be preferred, bythose who esteem intrinsic merit aboveexterior show.
