Great quantities ofbeaver skins are annually brought fromHudsons Bay. After the hair is cut offfor the use of the Hatter, the skin is putto a variety of purposes. The mentionof beaver hats seldom fails to call our at-tention to the animal which supplies thematerial that gives them their principalbeauty and value. These wonderful creatures are nativesof North America, and are amphibious:they cut down trees with their teeth; theymake banks twenty feet high and seven oreight thick, to secure their habitationsfrom the water. Their mode of building,their industry, and form of government,are alike admirable: and if my youngreaders will peruse the history of the bea-ver, they will find that in its foresight anddomestic economy, it is far superior tothe bee and ant; and in sagacity, pru-dence, and ingenuity, it is only inferiorto man, THE

The timber chiefly used by Coopers, isoak; the staves, when put together, beingsecured by hoops of wicker, wood, andiron. He makes all kinds of brewingutensils, such as vats, mash-tubs, and bar-rels to hold beer, ale, and porter; he alsomakes casks for wine, cider, and perry;small pails to milk the cows in; churnsto make butter, and tubs to preserve it;hogsheads for sugar, small barrels for oy-sters, besides various kinds of tubs andpails used in domestic concerns.
