ol having gone through the se-veral JACK OF ALL TRADES. 45 veral processes of scouring, beating, andoiling, is delivered to the carders,, who,by passing it between the iron teeth oftwo instruments called cards, arrange itfor spinning. From the spinners it passesto the Weaver, who winds the woof onspools, and fixes the warp lengthways inhis loom. By treading alternately on thetreadle, he raises and lowers these threads,and at the same time throws the shuttlefilled with wool from hand to hand: byanother motion they are struck close to-gether, and thus is the warp filled withwoof. The cloth is delivered by theWeavers to the cloth-workers and carders,with whom it undergoes various prepara-tions before it is sent to the dyer. Press-ing is the last process, after which it isready for use. Whilst we reflect with pleasure that ourown country produces the important arti-cles of wool and flax, we should, to theutmost of our power, encourage homemanufactures in preference to those im-ported.
