Description

New Orleans: LITTLE WOODS AREA, 07/1972

Shows the houses on piers in the shallows of Lake Pontchartrain, common in the early 20th century. The majority in New Orleans were destroyed in the 1920s and 1930s with the lakefront land reclamation and levee project; the exception being the collection here at Little Woods, which survived for generations more. Many of these were destroyed in Hurricane Georges in 1998; the rest in Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
