[edit]DescriptionLitter (PSF).png |
English: A standard Roman lectica, a litter consisting of a couch resting on four legs, protected by surrounding curtains, and raised on poles by slaves known as lecticarii (typically attractive, strong, and well-dressed in red) and preceded by another known as the anteambulo who cleared the way with calls of Dare locum meo domino ("Give place to my lord") and physical assault. The Roman funereal litter had a similar design. Once public opprobrium no longer restrained their use, lecticae were regulated by Julius Caesar and the early emperors. Under the late empire, their use was ubiquitous among the wealthy and various stations around Rome allowed lecticae to be rented by the lower classes. |
