Lithic implement |

Description |
English: A crude unfinished flint tool which is most probably a handaxe. The artefact was knapped from honey-coloured flint (which is a type of chert); this has several lighter patches, along with a small brown mineral seam running through one face, which is hollow at several of the spots where it emerges. There are also one large and two small areas of cortex. The artefact has the appearance of a long and slightly crescent-shaped handaxe. The artefact was skilfully knapped, generally through removing large flakes, to produce a piece that it rather slim when seen from the side. The surface has lost its sheen, but otherwise shows no wear. The artefact’s curious shape may result from the way it was made; perhaps the maker was inexperienced and was unable to produce a regular symmetrical handaxe from this piece of flint, which, with its various mineral inclusions, may have flaked rather awkwardly. Nevertheless, the edges are sharp and almost straight, and numerous small flakes have been removed to improve them; some flakes may also have resulted from use. Indeed, despite its shape, there is no reason why this tool could not have been used. Its similarity to conventional handaxes suggests a likely Palaeolithic date.
