Memorial in Lisburn Cathedral

In loving memory of Lieutenant Commander Lisburn Curtis CRAIG. Royal Navy. Elder son of Rt Hon Charles Curtis Craid formerly M.P. for Co Antrim. who with 35 of his comrades gave his life for his country when H.M.S. Venetia on which he was in command was sunk by a mine in the Thames Estuary on 19 October 1940.

Desmond Lisburn Curtis CRAIG. Lieutenant Commander Royal Navy of H.M.S. Venetia Born 6 March 1904 at Fortwilliam Park, Belfast to Charles Curtis Craig M.P. and Lilian Bowring Craig, nee Wimble, later Captain. the Rt. Hon., P.C., D.L., J.P of Old Brewery House Malmesbury, Wiltshire. 1911 with his parents and sibling at 55 Great Cumberland Place, Marylebone, London. 31 December 1935 whist serving on H.M.S. Ganges as Lieutenant R.N. he was certificated in flying a Blackburn Bluebird 76 H.P. Genet at Suffolk and Eastern Counties Aero Club. Husband of Josephine Nancie Rose Craig, nee Richards of Gewkerne, Somerset who he married in 1934, at Kensington Middlesex. Killed on active service at sea 19 October 1940 aged 36. Commemorated on the Plymouth Naval Memorial, Devon and on a memorial in Lisburn Cathedral.

Promotions Lieutenant 30 April 1926. Lieutenant Commander 30 April 1934. Commanded as Lt Commander H.M.S. Seamew (T43) River gunboat from 8 February 1939 – April 1941 and "V" Class destroyer Venetia on 25 May, 1940 to his death 19 October1940.
