Walter Charter BOOMER M.C. Captain 12th Royal Irish Rifles. Born 25 September 1891 at Circular Road Lisburn to Richard Walter and Jane Armstrong Boomer, nee Charter, later of Knockmore Cottage, Lisburn, County Down Ireland. At rest in Dadizeele New Cemetery, Belgium.

Supplement to Edinburgh Gazette dated 22 October 1917. Awarded to Military Cross Military Cross Citation. T./Lt. Walter. Charter Boomer, R. Ir. Rifles. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when in command of his company. When the assaulting troops were falling back he rallied them under very heavy fire, collected parties of other units, and reorganised the defence of the front line. George Reilly BELL. Private 6270, 2nd Irish Guards. Son of Joseph and Elizabeth Bell. Born at Castledawson, Londonderry. Died 21 January 1918 aged 27 years. Joint war gratuity was granted to his brother William and sister Margaret 27 November 1918 revised 1 December 1919. At rest in Brown’s Copse Cemetery, Roeux, France.

Alexander CAIRNS. Private 10635, 4th Canadian Expeditionary Force Born 3 May 1892 in Lisburn County Down Ireland to Mrs Dora Cairns. Last residence, 2 Avenue Street, Lisburn Ireland, occupation Barber. Joined up 22 September 1914. Died of gunshot wounds to his head at 5-40pm in General Hospital, Boulogne 30 April 1915 France. At rest in Boulogne Eastern Cemetery, France

Rupert John CLARKE. Private 466247, 7th Canadian Expeditionary Force Born 18 January 1887 at South Taunton near Oak Hampton, Devonshire England. Next of kin his mother Mrs Mary Grace Clarke of 30 Leamington Road Villas Park, Westbourne London, occupation, farmer. Enlisted 3 July 1915 aged 28 years and 6 months. Died of gunshot wounds to his head at 49 Causality Clearing Station 24 September 1916. At rest in Contay British Cemetery Contay France.

Alfred James CLARKE. Rifleman 11/17436, 11/13th Royal Irish Rifles attached to 22nd Entrenching Battalion formerly Born 1891 to James and Marianne Clarke, (1901 Irish Census) with his parents and siblings at 2 Clogher, County Antrim. At the time of his death his parents were residing at Belsize Road, Lisburn, County Antrim. Killed in action 29 March 1918 age 27 years. His father was granted a war gratuity 25 September 1918 revised 27 November 1919. Commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial, France.

Henry CORKIN. Corporal 17480, 11/13th Royal Irish Rifles Born 1893 in Lisburn to Henry and Elizabeth Corkin, of 83, Gregg Street Lisburn, County Down. His brother John also died at his home In France 6 October 1915. Accidentally drowned on the battle field 17 May 1916 aged 23 years. His father was granted a war gratuity 11 December 1916 revised 20 August 1919. At rest in Authuile Military Cemetery, Authuille France.

John CORKIN. Rifleman 17481, 11th Royal Irish Rifles. Born 1895 in Lisburn to Henry and Elizabeth Corkin, of 83, Gregg Street Lisburn, County Down. His brother Henry also fell Discharged from the army 2 October 1916. Died at his home of diabetes which he had from six months the 6 February 1917 aged 22 years. His father was granted a war gratuity 19 September 1919. At rest in Lisburn Cemetery, County Down Northern Ireland.

Robert John CORKEN. Corporal 17674, 108th Coy Machine Gun Corps (Infantry) formerly 1st Royal Irish Rifles. Son of James who was granted a war gratuity 14 December 1917 revised 23 October 1919 Presumed Killed in action at the Battle of the Somme, France 1 July 1916.

James Alexander CORRY. Rifleman 1088, C Coy, 14th Royal Irish Rifles. Born 1888to Agnes Corry at Shankill County Antrim Ireland. At the time of his death his mother was residing at 93, Rugby Avenue, Belfast. Killed in action in France 16 August 1917 aged 26 years in France. His mother was granted a war gratuity 3 December 1918 revised 21 November 1919. Commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.

Husband of Jane Corry, of 151, Dunluce Avenue, Lisburn Road, Belfast. Served in the South African Campaign. Nine years' service in 2nd Bn. His wife was granted a war gratuity 4 November 1918 revised 24 November 1919. Killed in action 12 April 1918 aged 45 years. Commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.

Archibald (Birth name Archie) COWAN. Rifleman 11/3038, 11th Royal Irish Rifles. Born 8 October 1895 at Church Street, Lisburn, Ireland to Samuel and Mary Cowan nee Hunter Died from the effects of gas poisoning 1 September 1916. His father was granted a war gratuity 29 January 1917 revised 26 September 1919. At rest in Bailleul Communal Cemetery Extension, Nord France

John FENTON. Rifleman 17630, 11th Royal Irish Rifles. Born 13 October 1889 at Woods Alley, Lisburn to John and Robina Fenton, nee McConkey 1901 Irish Census. Residing with his mother Robina and siblings at 10 Boyne Square, St George Belfast Antrim, occupation, general labourer. Killed in action 1 September 1916 in Belgium. A joint war gratuity was granted to his mother and Miss Maggie Russell 22 February 1917. Mis M Russell had her gratuity revised 16 January 1919 and his mother had her gratuity revised 29 December 1919. Commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium.

George Edward FLYNN. Rifleman 17644 Royal Irish Rifles (S.A.R.U.V.) Born 13 August 1896 at Church Street, Lisburn County Antrim to James and Agnes Jane Flynn nee Wilson. Enlisted as George Flynn 12 September 1914, posted to Clandeboye Camp, Bangor County Down. Discharged 2 November 1914 under Kings Regulation 392 (iii)(c) Not being likely to become an efficient soldier. Served only 53 days Died 12 June 1916 aged 19 years of a fractur of the skull, crushed by a wheel of a motor lorry accident, instance death. His residence was Hillhall Road Lisburn.

Albert GRIFFIN. Rifleman 5930, 2nd Royal Irish Rifles. Born 7 May 1897 to Thomas James and Mary Griffin, nee Lavery of Ballynahinch Road, Lisburn. At the time of his death his parents were residing at 41, Sloan Street, County Antrim. Killed in action 24 March 1918. His mother was granted a war gratuity 2 April 1919. Robert HERON. Rifleman 11/17866, C Coy, 11th Royal Irish Rifles. Born 29 October 1894 at Wardsborough, Lisburn County Antrim to William and Ellen Heron, nee Watson of 8, Bansley's Row, Lisburn, Co. Antrim. Killed in action in France 12 August 1917 aged 23 years. His mother was granted a war gratuity 14 March 1918 revised 18 September 1919. Commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium.

William Henry HUGHES. Rifleman 17901, 12th Royal Irish Rifles. Born 28 November 1896 to James and Margaret Hughes nee Waring at Bansley's Row, Lisburn, County Antrim, later of 54 Gregg Street, Lisburn. In France 6 October 1915. Died a Prisoner of War, died at Charleville Hospital 27 October 1918. His mother Maggie was granted a war gratuity 31 January 1920. At rest in Terlincthun British Cemetery, Wimille, France.

George Henry HULL. Lance Corporal 17687, 108th Coy Machine Gun Corps (Infantry) formerly 1st Royal Irish Rifles. Born 2nd October 1893 to George and Harriet Hull, nee Lavery at Lambeg County Antrim Ireland Husband of Sarah Tracey who he married 7 August 1915 in Lisburn Killed in action at the Battle of the Somme, 1st July 1916. His widow was granted a war gratuity 8 May 1917 revised 13 November 1919 Commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.

Hugh HARVEY. Rifleman 4/2221, C Coy,13th Royal Irish Rifles. Son of Hugh and Lizzie Harvey, of 84, Hill Hall Rd., Lisburn, Co. Down. Killed in action at the Battle of the Somme France 1st July 1916 aged 18 years. His mother was granted a war gratuity 6 April 1918 revised 12 November 1919. At rest in Serre Road Cemetery No 2, France.

Frederick Cross KING. 2nd Lieutenant, 17th Royal Irish Rifles attached to 25th Coy, Machine Gun Corps (Infantry) Born 20 July 1883 at Ballymacarrett House, Belfast to Alexander and Emma King, nee Green Husband of Anne Jane King, nee Wilson of 9, Ladbroke Square, London, W. 11. (Medal Roll Index Card) shows an address for his widow residing at 18 Cumberland Terrace, Regents Square, London N.W.1 His wife was born in 1893 in Belgium to Robert, from Limerick and Mary Ann, nee Charter from Cumberland. Her father died in 1893 in Belgium. Her mother died in 1939 and is at rest in Lisburn, County Antrim He was in France on the 5 August 1916, died 23 October 1916 aged 33. George LAIRD. Rifleman 8835, 2nd Royal Irish Rifles. Born 27 November 1890 to James and Eliza Laird of Low Road, Lisburn, County Antrim. Killed in action at Hooge, Belgium 16 June 1915. The following (all half sibling, surname SHIELDS) were granted a joint war gratuity 7 March 1916. Thomas, James, John, Abraham and Ellen. 19 April 1916 his sister-in-law Mrs Jane Shields granted a war gratuity. 27 September 1919 Thomas Shields had a revised war gratuity. Commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium.

Residing with his parents at Young Street, Lisburn Ireland. Killed in action in France 24 June 1916. His father was granted a war gratuity 29 November 1916 revised 3 September 1919. Commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.

Henry LOVIE/LOVEY. East Lancashire Regiment Birth name Thomas Henry LOVEY served as Henry Topping

Henry TOPPING, Private 9443, B Coy, 2nd East Lancashire Regiment. Born 21 April 1888 Henry and Alice Lovey, nee Topping (Irish 1901 census) With his parents and siblings at 30 Young Street, Lisburn. (Irish 1911 census) His parents and siblings were residing at 32 Millbrook Road, Lisburn. He was serving in India as Private with the 2nd East Lancashire Regiment aged 25 years. The family later moved to of 45, Young Street, Lisburn, Co. Antrim. In France from 5 November 1914. Killed in action 9 May 1915 aged 26 years. His mother Alice Lovey was granted a war gratuity 24 August 1916 revised 19 February 1917 and 3 September 1919. Commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium.

His father was married as Henry Lovey aged 22 years (born 1867) Soldier with the Highland Light Infantry to Alice Toping of Belfast at Lisburn Parish Church 7 August 1889

Medically discharged 24 May 1918. He was born in 1871.

Benjamin LYNESS. Rifleman G/654 1st Garrison Battalion, Royal Irish Rifles. Born 6 March 1882 to William and Mary Lyness nee O'Brien at Bakery Entry, Lisburn. Husband of Mary Lyness, nee McGrath who he married in Lisburn 26 February 1910. Both resided at Piper Hill, Lisburn. Died at County Infirmary, Lisburn of dysentery whilst on demobilisation leave 15 April 1919 age 37. His widow was granted a gratuity 2 May 1923. At rest in Lisburn Cemetery, Lisburn County Antrim

Born 24 October 1885 at Ballykeel County Down to Alexander and Martha McBride, nee McGuinness of 22, Old Hillsborough Road, Lisburn, County Down. 1901 with his widowed mother and Alexander and other siblings at 34 Young Street, Lisburn, occupation farm servant. 1911 with his mother and siblings at 22 Old Hillsborough Road, Lisburn occupation general labourer Killed in action 23 October 1918 aged 33 years. His mother was granted a war gratuity 19 March 1919. At rest in Ingoyghem Military Cemetery, Belgium.

Robert McBRIDE Private 12/3071, 11th Royal Irish Rifles. Brother of Alexander, above) Born 1888 to Alexander and Martha McBride nee McGuinness of 22 Old Hillsborough Road, Lisburn. 1901 with his widowed mother, Alexander (above) and other siblings at 34 Young Street, Lisburn. 1911 with his mother and siblings at 22 Old Hillsborough Road, Lisburn occupation general labourer Following information from his service record. Enlisted at Lisburn 28 November 1914, aged 26 years, civilian occupation, labourer, status single 5 October 1915 posted to the 18th Battalion. 22 November 1915 posted with the 18th to join the (BEF) British Expeditionary Force) He was posted back to Royal Irish Rifles Depot from BEF on the 1 March 1916

Discharged (to pension) at Belfast 25 April 1916 under Para 392 (XVI) Kings Regulations. No longer physically fit for war service to his home at 22 Old Hillsborough Road Military character, very good. Served 1 year and 150 days. His pension stared 8 June 1916 Medical Board held on the 29 March 1916 at 4th London General Military Hospital, London Cause for discharged, as stated in his records. Pulmonary Tuberculosis and Tubular laryngitis. Originated middle of November 1915 in France. Has cough occasional night sweats, hardness of voice. TB present in sputum. Ulceration and vocal cords present. Result of active service – exposure. Total disablement. He was offered sanatorium treatment, which he refused.

Not in his records He died 16 October 1916 aged 27 years at his home at 22 Old Hillsborough Road, Lisburn of Pulmonary Tuberculosis which he suffered from for eight months. His mother was granted a war gratuity 13 September 1919.


Robert McBRIDE. Rifleman 9246, 1st Royal Irish Rifles. Born 1887 to Edward and Annie McBride, nee Parse. Irish 1901 census) with his parents and siblings at 75 Sloan Roar, Lisburn. 1911 Parents and siblings at 28, Millbrook Road Lisburn, County Antrim. He was not at home when the census was taken. Killed in action at Neuve Chapelle, France 10 March 1915 age 29 years. His father was granted a war gratuity 29 November 1915 revised 26 July 1919. Commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial, France.

Frederick McKIBBEN. Rifleman 16762, 13th Royal Irish Rifles. Son of Thomas and Annie McKibben. of 24, Sloan Street Lisburn, County Antrim. Killed in action of the first day of the Battle of the Somme 1 July 1916. His father was granted a war gratuity 9 November 1917 revised 23 October 1919. Commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme France.

James Burke McDOWELL. Corporal 20/160, 12th Royal Irish Rifles. Born 15 September 1888 to James and Mary Margaret McDowell, nee Burk of Malvern Street, Belfast Parents married in Drumbo, County Down. Killed in action 23 March 1918. His mother was granted a war gratuity 17 August 1918 revised 28 November 1919. Commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial, France.

J Edward MARTIN. Rifleman 3894, 11th Royal Irish Rifles. Husband of Susan Martin, nee Murray who he married 16 January 1910 at St. Columbas Church Londonderry, occupation soldier. Father James, deceased. 28 September 1916 he made his Will leaving his property to his wife of 48 Millbrook Road, Lisburn At the time of his death his widow was residing at 26 Sloan Street Lisburn, County Antrim. In France 4 October 1915. Killed in action 1 September 1916 at Ypres Belgium. His widow was granted a war gratuity 14 February 1917 revised 3 October 1919. Alexander MOORE. Rifleman 11/18495, 11th Royal Irish Rifles. Born 20 October 1894 to Alexander and Margaret Moore, nee Allen of 72, Bridge Street Lisburn, County Antrim. Died in German Hospital in Dusseldorf 26 May 1918 aged 23. No one applied for a war gratuity. At rest on Cologne Southern Cemetery, Germany.

John MULLIGAN. Lance Corporal 11/18527, 12th Royal Irish Rifles. Born 31 December 1894 to Richard and Ellen Mulligan, nee Black of Mercer Street, Lisburn. (1901 Irish Census) With his parents and siblings at 8 McKeown Street, Lisburn. (1911 Irish Census) With his parents and siblings at 16 Market Street, Lisburn, occupation, shoe maker. Killed in action 11 April 1918. His mother was granted a war gratuity 18 December 1919. Commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.

Killed in action 8 August 1917 aged 39 years. His mother was granted a war gratuity 13 March 1918 revised 8 November 1919. Commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium.

Robert PORTER. Corporal 5/4698, 14th Royal Irish Rifles. Born 10 March 1889 to William and Alice Porter, nee Porter at Culcavey, County Down . Married Margaret Thompson 17 July 1912 at Lisburn aged 26, residing at 26 Mill Street, Lisburn, occupation labourer. Killed in action 15 August 1917. His widow was granted a war gratuity Commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium.

Robert SALLY. rifleman 18734, 11th Royal Irish Rifles. Born 15 February 1892 to Margaret Sally of 43 Canal Street, Lisburn, single person. (Irish 1901) with mother siblings his aunt, Jane at his grandmother’s, Margaret Sally at the same address. (Irish 1911 census) with his aunt Jane and grandmother still at the same address Husband of Jessie, nee Love who he married aged 21 years, 14 June 1915 at Lisburn. His surname was entered as Salley, Birth Sally Killed in action of the first day of the Battle of the Somme, France 1 July 1916. His widow was granted a war gratuity 11 March 1918 revised 19 November 1919. Commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial Somme France.

George SMITH. Rifleman 20/91, 12th Royal Irish Rifles. Born 4 November 1898 to George and Jane Smith, nee Gallagher of Hillhall Road, Lisburn

(Irish 1901 census) Residing with his parents and siblings at 15 Young Street, Lisburn. 1911 his widowed mother was residing at 12 Millbrook Road, Lisburn. At the time of his address his parents were residing at 20, Sloan Street Lisburn, County Antrim.  Died a Prisoner of War 9 November 1918 aged 20 years. The following were granted a war gratuity 15 January 1920. His mother, brother James and sister May Annie. His mothers was revised 6 February 1920

(Irish 1901-1911 census) With his parents and siblings at 79, Young Street, Lisburn, County Antrim. Killed in action 15 April 1918 aged 27. His mother was granted a war gratuity 30 December 1919. Commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.

David TATE. Corporal 11/19954, A Coy, 11th Royal Irish Rifles. Born 19 July 1890 to David and Charlotte Tate, nee Byer of Sloan Street, Lisburn. (Irish 1901-1911 census) With his parents and siblings at 79, Young Street, Lisburn, County Antrim. Husband of Minnie, nee Shaw who he married 30 September 1915 at Lisburn. At the time of his marriage he was serving with the Royal Irish Constabulary. Died of wounds received in action 24 June 1916 aged 26 years. His widow was granted a war gratuity 20 November 1916 revised 9 September 1919. At rest in Forceville Communal Cemetery and Extension, France.

(Irish 1901 Census) With his parents and siblings at 42 Millbrook Road, Lisburn. (Irish 1911 census) with his parents and siblings at 126, Grand Street, Low Road, Lisburn, County Antrim. Died in action 31 May 1917 in Belgium. His mother was granted a war gratuity 28 January 1918 revised 11 January 1919. At rest in Lindenhoek Chalet Military Cemetery, Belgium.

Husband of Annie, nee Crowe who he married aged 28 years, 30 December 1901 at Lisburn. His residence was Warren Terrace, Lisburn, father Thomas. (Irish 1911 Census) with his wife and children at 27, Millbrook Road Lisburn, County Antrim, occupation, net weaver. 15 December 1916 he made his Will leaving the whole property effects to his wife of 44 Millbrook Road, Lisburn. Killed in action 16 August 1917 age 45 years. His widow was granted a war gratuity 18 May 1918 revised 15 December 1919. Commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial Belgium.

His mother was granted a war gratuity 11 March 1922 His brother Samuel on the 16 October 1928 and his sister Mrs Eliza Ann Simpson 8 December 1928. Commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.

David WALSH. Lance Corporal 5205, 2nd Royal Irish Rifles. Born 10 April 1894 to David and Jane Walsh, nee Dugan of Hillsborough Road, Lisburn. (Irish 1901 Census) With his parents and siblings at 24 Dublin Road, Lisburn. 1911 with his mother and siblings at 21, Hill Street Lisburn, County Antrim. Occupation, mill worker. Died at Le Treport 10 April 1915 age 22 years. His mother was granted a war gratuity 24 November 1919. At Rest in Le Treport Military Cemetery, France.

Alexander Colvin WELCH. Rifleman 11/1013, 11th Royal Irish Rifles. Born 29 March 1892 to Thomas and Catherine Welch, nee Leggate of Antrim Road Lisburn. (Irish 1901 Census) With his parents and siblings at 76 Chapel Hill, Lisburn. 1911 with his parents and siblings at 13 Market Street, Lisburn. Occupation heckle setter. At the time of his death his parents were residing at 13, Dublin Road Lisburn, County. Antrim. Killed in action of the first day of the Battle of the Somme 1 July 1916. His father was granted a war gratuity 28 March 1917, revised 12 October 1919. Commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.

James WILSON. Bombardier 50047, 10/13th Trench Mortar Battery, Royal Field Artillery. Born 1882 in Liverpool to James and Ellen Wilson who were residing 76 Wavertree, Liverpool, Lancashire. (mother native of Liverpool) (Irish 1901 census) Residing with his parents and siblings at 26 Smithfield, Lisburn, occupation Machine Boy. 1911 with his widowed mother at 56 Ashleaf Place Lisburn. Died 7 October 1918. A joint war gratuity was granted 25 May 1919 to his mother, Brothers Joseph and Hamlet, sisters Eliza Jane (Lizzie) and Sarah Ann Frazer. At rest in Amara War Cemetery, Iraq.
