English: Lisbon – Monument to the Heroes of the Peninsular War.

The First Stone was laid on September 18, 1908, during a ceremony presided by King Manuel II.

Front (South) Face.
Top : The Nation Raising the Sword of Victory.
Bottom right inscription : "AO POVO E AOS HEROIS DA GUERRA PENINSULAR 1808 – 1814"
Figurative group led by a soldier, and composed of civilians and friars swearing over the Tomb of Vasco de Gama to defend Portugal, under the inscription : "Reliquias de Portugal".
Bottom left inscription : "Levantamento popular pela independéncia – Junho de 1808"
Left upright : the list of victorious battles fought alongside the British Army from Vimeiro to Linhas de Tores Vedras, and supplemented by the Spanish Army from Fuentes de Oñoro to Ortez and Toulouse – leading to the collapse of the napoléonic regime :

Four weeks earlier (August 21, 1908), on the heights of Vimeiro, King Manuel had already inaugurated the monument commemorating the first victorious battle : Vimeiro, fought on August 21, 1808.
