[edit]DescriptionLionel Loueke Trio, 3 april 2016 BIM Amsterdam - Lionel Loueke (51312312692).jpg |
Guitarist Lionel Loueke returns to his original electric trio with the rock-infused music from his Blue Note album Gaïa. ‘Hendrix-like wails, kora-like chimes’ (The Guardian). Once praised as ‘a gentle virtuoso’ (New York Times), Lionel Loueke reappears with a surprisingly raw and rock-infused sound on his recent album Gaïa. The West-African jazz guitarist wears his B.B. King and Jimi Hendrix influences op his sleeve on Gaïa, which was recorded live in the studio by Grammy-winning producer Don Was. Loueke called in the help of bassist Massimo Biolcati and drummer Ferenc Nemeth, with whom he recorded his Blue Note debut Karibu. De most complex rhythms sound like natural grooves in the hands of these three friends and perfect team players. Since he started playing guitar at 17, Lionel Loueke has achieved a stunning development, from playing to cassette tapes in his native Cotonou, Benin, to performing with among others Herbie Hancock, Jack DeJohnette and the greatest talents of his generation, including Esperanza Spalding and Robert Glasper.
