But the spirits that drag men into the waters of ariver or down to Lung Wangs palace in the depths ofocean at least make a practice of confining theiractivity to their chosen element. Far more dangerousare the gloomy homeless souls that stalk the countryfields and prowl round villages, always on the look-out for victims and always ready to deceive theignorant. There are terrible vampires and devil-foxesthat throw mists over mens eyes and minds and makethem believe they see before them damsels of bewitch-
