If the rites of Taoism and the majorTaoist gods were expelled from the land, minor deitiessuch as those mentioned might continue to attractjust as much or just as little reverence as they do atpresent; similarly ancestor-worship would not neces-sarily be affected by the official abolition of the cultof Confucius. The fact that the Tu Ti is supposed to interesthimself in such matters as the death of individualsseems to suggest that he must have been in origin anancestral god: but I cannot find any trustworthyevidence that this is so, though it seems that in somecases at least he (like the Cheng Huang) was a humanbeing posthumously raised to quasi-divine rank.
