Summary
[edit]DescriptionLinlithgow Marches - geograph.org.uk - 1357695.jpg |
English: Linlithgow Marches. Taken four days after 1351150, this shown the Marches procession nearing the end of its travels. During the course of the day, it will have travelled about a mile and a half to the town's western boundary before returning to the centre of the town. The dignitaries will then go to Blackness, once the seaport of Linlithgow, which is the easternmost limit of the town, some three miles distant. This photo shows the reformed procession returning to the town to carry out the last act - marching three times round the cross well. The Marches has been taking place since around the 12th century to inspect the security of the town's marches (boundaries). |
