Description |
English: a map of the United States Chromolithograph Map By: J.W. Powell Sackett & Wilhelms Lith Co., N.Y. Date: 1891 This map is NOT an original Garfield family collection piece. It was acquired on advice of the curatorial staff during the renovation. It is, however, representative of the lads' interest in geography. The cartographer, John Wesley Powell was a well-known explorer, ethnologist, and topographer. He made a name for himself as an explorer and professor. He, like James A. Garfield, studied Greek and Latin, and worked as a preacher as well. An opponent of Slavery, John Wesley Powell enlisted for service at the outbreak of the American Civil War and served as an artilleryman and a cartographer. Despite losing his right arm in combat at Shiloh, he continued to work as an explorer and cartographer after the Civil War and went on to explore the American West with an interest in ethnography and linguistics. Two different features at other National Park sites are named for him, and he is buried in Arlington National Cemetery. |
