inf*^^sular 1808, the Peninsular war began which contributed sowar, ibo8. materially to Napoleons eventual downfall. In hisambition he compelled the royal family of Spain to abdicate, andplaced his own brother Joseph on that tottering throne. But theSpaniards were justly incensed at this measure, and drove thepinchbeck king from their ancient throne. This was Englandsopportunity: a treaty was entered into with Spain and Portugal:and as a consequence, an army was sent to the Peninsula under theleadership of sir Arthur Wellesley, who by this time had returned l820 CONVENTION OF CINTRA* 5^3 in triumph from India. When the EngHsh began to land in Portugal, Junot attacked them with the object of driving them back into the sea. Wellesley, however, not only stood his ground at Vimiera (Aug. 21, 1808) but ^?*^J® °^ badly defeated the French. Wellesley wanted to follow AugusfiSoS. up his success with vigour, but sir Hew Dalrymple arrived from England, and being senior, took over the command.
