Summary
[edit]DescriptionLinenhall Stables 2009 - Redevelopment site - geograph.org.uk - 1289356.jpg |
English: Linenhall Stables 2009 - Redevelopment site. Looking west across the centre of the Linenhall Stables redevelopment site. The houses beyond are on Stanley Street with Stanley Place behind the black gates. The redundant stables site is earmarked for redevelopment, and following acts of theft and vandalism the site was cleared in April 2009. This photo was taken from the multi-storey car park adjoining the Crowne Plaza Hotel. To see what the stables looked like before the site was cleared see 1280235 which was taken from the same car park, but from a higher level.
The Linenhall Stables were built just after the First World War on the site of the historic Linenhall. The stables served the Roodee racecourse, despite the fact that the horses then had to walk some distance over tarmac roads. In the early 2000s agreement was reached for new state of the art stables to be built on the old gasworks site with access to the racecourse through one of the arches of the famous railway viaduct. |
