| Description |
English: Line of limestone outcrops. Visible among the grass at this location is what might appear at first site to be exposed soil; however, it is really a prominent line of limestone outcrops, stretching for a distance of about 70 metres from SW to NE in a pavement-like formation. This photo was taken near the SW end of the line.
An old drove road crossed the Gallangad Burn at the Common Ford, not far from the point from which this photo was taken; see 1402261. As explained there, the drove road probably deflected to the north-east at that point, and so will have followed a route along, or close to, this line of outcrops. Note that the outcrops lie along a green grassy band, noticeably different from the dense cover of heather on either side. This might be accounted for by the presence of the limestone, reducing the acidity of the soil. However, this route did appear (to me) to be the most natural one to follow after crossing the Gallangad Burn at the Common Ford (see the last-cited link, above), so this green ribbon may be a relic of the drove road itself, with the rock having been exposed by centuries of trampling by the drovers' herds; compare the appearance of the drove road in 1402260. |
