Volk, who described The LincolnLife-Mask and How it was Made, in this magazine for December, 1881. which the South has found it hard to for-get, and the North ardently wishes couldbe blotted from all remembrance. Lin-colns attitude toward the South, whenfrilly comprehended, helped to obliteratethe acid stains of the reconstruction per-iod. In other words, we are to-day atruly united country not only because Lin-coln conducted the war to a successfulissue; but because of his wise nnd tolerantand sympathetic leadership during that war. That he failed pathetically to carrythrough this plan, upon which his heartwas set, illustrates, also, the fact thatuninterrupted success is not necessary tothe fame of the great figures of history.Lincolns failure to win support for thishumane policy deeply grieved him, but themisadventure
