We wenton into all sorts of war talk, for it was ex-pected that Virginia would secede in threedays and bring the new Confederacy one Statenearer Washington and the Potomac. Closeupon the heels of that would surely come im-portant movements, and we expected to haveour parts in them. Something or other led Ellsworth to goand pick up that rifle. It is one of the newpatterns. He was a perfect drill-master anda kind of machine for accuracy in the Zouavemanual of arms. It was a genuine pleasurefor me to put him through the manual, andwatch the wonderful exactness of his everymovement. In obedience to my orders hestepped around here and there, and I had himfacing this window, very near it, when I said, LINCOLN AT WORK i Aim ! Up came the rifle mechanically, andthe muzzle went crashing through that pane ofglass.
