Onenightt when he had received a long letterfrom home, Scott opened his heart and toldEvans the story. Scott said: ** The President was the kind-est man I had ever seen; I knew him at onceby a Lincoln medal I had long worn. I wasscared at first, for I had never before talkedwith a great man. But Mr. Lincoln was soeasy with me, so gentle, that I soon forgotmy fright. He asked me all about thepeople at home, the neighbors, the farm,and where I went to school, and who myschool-mates were. Then he asked me aboutmother, and how she looked, and I was gladI could take her photograph from my bosomand show it to him. He said how thankfulI ought to be that my mother still lived, andhow, if he was in my place, he would tryto make her a proud mother, and never cause her a sorrow or a tear. I cannot 36
