the very first overture of peace fromany people of the Southern States, Mr.Lincoln is now so far from being inclinedto a full and general amnesty that he im-poses a new and impossible condition ofpeace. An impossible condition, we say,not merely because it is impossible forus with all our armies to compel theabandonment of slavery, but because itis much worse than impossible for thosewho control the armies now at warwith us to assume to themselves and thentransfer to Mr. Lincoln the control of asubject over which neither of them hasthe least authority either in the federalor rebel constitutions. Instead of thatprofessed approval of an amnesty, henow spurns the very first lispings ofpeace. A little more than a year ago Mr. Lin-coln seized the occasion of the meeting ofthe Republican Convention at Springfieldto declare himself, still more emphaticallythan ever, as waging the war exclusivelyto save the Union. He had been chargedwith waging it for abolition purposes,and his reply was:—
