Summary

[edit]
Description

c/n 177 Built as a stock Standard J-1 for military service. Sold as surplus after WW1 and modified by the Lincoln-Standard Corporation to become a three-seater with a 150hp license-built Hispano-Suiza engine. It was purchased by the Hunter brothers from Sparta, Illinois, and named ‘Old Hisso’ because of its engine. After performing as part of the ‘Hunter Flying Circus’, the aircraft was replaced by more modern types and sold. Ken Hunter later bought the aircraft back and restored it to airworthy condition. It was then donated to the Smithsonian Institute in 1964 by Kerr-McGee Oil Industries, for whom Ken Hunter was chief pilot. It is seen in the Mary Baker Engen Restoration Hangar at the Steven F. Udvar Hazy Center, Washington Dulles International Airport, Chantilly, Virginia
