He was the acknowledgedleader of the local bar, whose services were con-stantly in demand, and the one man who couldbe relied upon to take a case in any of the coun-ties comprising the circuit, for he alone coveredthe entire route. It is misleading to belittle thevalue of this daily experience on the ground thatmost of the litigations were of no great mone-tary importance. Every lawyer familiar withtrial work knows that small cases often raisemore difficult questions of law and demand nicerknowledge of legal principles than causes onwhich millions depend; and it should also beremembered that many of the small suits were,in effect, test cases which settled the law for thenew State. Of course no one could have practised beforethe court and juries day after day and year afteryear in this way without learning something, andLincolns legal development was marked withevery year of his practice.
