Indeed,Mr. Whitney recalls several persons actually ontrial who not only took their meals with hisHonor and the bar, but also spent their eveningsin the judges room, without the slightest embar-rassment to any one. The inconvenience and discomforts of the lifewere at times almost unbearable, but Lincolnwas never known to join in the frequent protestsand complaints of his associates.
