Description

Limestone over dolostone in the Mississippian of Kentucky, USA.

The brown-colored rocks in the upper part of the photo are part of the St. Louis Limestone, as exposed in a roadcut near Frenchburg, Kentucky. A fossil coral zone occurs in this unit - they were ripped up and tossed by ancient storms. The corals have been silicified. Eroded-out corals are common in area creeks. Paleokarst occurs in places in the St. Louis Limestone at this site; when the cut was fresh, a small paleocave here had speleothem. Speleothem can be collected in area creeks, too. Some barite masses occur at this locality, a few meters above the base of the St. Louis. The top of the St. Louis has a paleosol profile.

The ochre-colored rocks below are part of the Renfro Member of the Slade Formation. The Renfro is a very shallow marine/marginal marine carbonate unit dominated by dolostones. At this cut, the Renfro is relatively thin, but nearby is a 120 feet thick section of Renfro. The unit varies considerably in thickness over short areas.
