Summary

[edit]
Description

Limestone breccia or brecciated limestone from the Mississippian of Ohio, USA.

The Maxville Limestone is the only Middle to Late Mississippian-aged stratigraphic unit in Ohio. Its outcrop belt is not extensive - it principally occurs in Muskingum County and Perry County in eastern and southeastern Ohio. The Maxville Formation can also be found as cobbles and pebbles in the basal Sharon Formation (Lower Pennsylvanian), which disconformably overlies Ohio's Mississippian rocks. Paleohills, or erosional outliers, of Maxville Limestone have also been identified.

This remarkable limestone surface consists of abundant, variably-sized, angular clasts cemented together with grayish-colored calcite. If this is a depositional fabric, then it is a limestone breccia. If this formed by post-diagenetic fracturing-and-cementing, then it is a brecciated limestone. I suspect the latter.

Stratigraphy: Maxville Limestone, Meramecian to Chesterian, Middle to Upper Mississippian

Locality: erosion control block in ditch along the east-bound entrance ramp from Rt. 60 to Rt. 16 (southeastern portion of Rt. 16-Rt. 60 interchange), north-northwest of the towns of Trinway & Dresden, northern Cass Township, northwestern Muskingum County, eastern Ohio, USA (~40° 09’ 13.56” North latitude, ~82° 01’ 29.37” West longitude) - likely derived from a commercial quarry in southwestern Muskingum County, eastern Ohio, USA
