Summary

[edit]
Description Today, the Holzhausen fort is amongst the very best preserved fort along the Limes. Its wall-like enclosure stems from the earthen dam which once bore the defensive parapet. The up to 3m high remnants of the stone wall and buried underneath. The foundation walls of the corner towers and the towers of the fort's four gates are exposed. Their upper stone layer have been reattached during the preservation. Several stone foundations from the headquarters building (principia) are recognisable in the interior, particularly the semi-circular apsis of the standard's shrine. The campaign symbols of the troops were stored here, and one also paid tribute to the emperor and the Roman state gods. The remaining portions of the headquarters building as well as the rest of the buildings in the fort consisted of wood and have not left behind any visible traces.
