Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Lime kilns near Home Farm 1 These two disused lime kilns are on the side of the short narrow tarmacked road that goes up to Home Farm from the unclassified road through the village of Teffont Evias. Although the kilns are marked on the OS 1:10,000 map, no information has been found about these kilns. Lime making was one of the earliest 'industrial' activities, and lime kilns were constructed largely in the period 1750 to 1850 to burn limestone in order to make lime for local use: to spread on the fields as a soil improver, to make mortar for construction and for many other uses. Locally sourced wood fuel was plentiful for the production of charcoal, used as fuel in the kilns for the burning of limestone. In Teffont Evias there would have been a plentiful source of limestone from the local quarries such as in Chilmark which are only 1km away to the west. Lime burning had all but died out by the turn of the 20th century and kilns like these were abandoned.
