Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Lime kiln on the estuary, Trefdraeth/Newport This massive lime kiln, referred to as Shiphill, Sheepkill and Bryncyn kiln, can be seen on the northern shore of the Nevern estuary. Limestone fragments and culm were brought to the adjacent little creek by boats coming in with the tide. There may have been a kiln here since medieval times, supplying the castle grange at nearby Berry Hill, but this structure probably dates from the 19th c. There was also a small shipyard, owned and operated throughout most of the nineteenth century by the local Havard family. Wading birds including egrets can often be spotted foraging in the mud at low tide here.
