Summary
[edit]DescriptionLime kiln near East Lomond - geograph.org.uk - 880168.jpg |
English: Lime kiln near East Lomond Lime stone from several quarries in the hills close to this kiln was broken into egg-sized pieces and fed into it from the top, mixed with the necessary proportion of coal brought from coal mines such as Balgonie and Balbirnie a little farther away. The two men doing this heavy work (the Breakers) had to work in atrocious conditions above the kiln in a constant hot atmosphere of stinging coal smoke. The lime was used mainly as fertiliser on farms all round the country, as well as in mortar for building. This industry started around 1800 and died out during the 20th century as improved industrial methods of producing lime were developed. |
