Notes
English: Kwila or Ebony wood is carved to make these spatulars from the Trobriand or Woodlark Islands. It is carved with incised designs at the base of the handle and the top end of the handles. This particular one is decoratively carved with incised patterns and painted with white lime but plainer ones are more commonly used to fill the mouth with lime. This is then chewed with the astringent betel nut (areca) to provide those partaking with a feeling of euphoria. (Grace Vele)
(Grace Vele)
