Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Part of Hurstville Historic District. Located 1¾ miles N.W. of Maquoketa, Jackson County, Iowa. Owned by the Jackson County Historical Society. Part of the company town of Hurstville, founded in 1871 by Alfred Hurst and his wealthy step-father Charles Stine. The company produced pure, white lime using huge, stone kilns to burn limestone rock into the powdery lime, used for plaster and etc. The 1st year, with 1 pot kiln, the company, then known as the, “Sand Ridge Draw Kiln,” produced 3,200 barrels of lime. When all 4 kilns were in simultaneous production, they produced an incredible 8,000 barrels of lime a day. To produce the lime, the kilns, in full operation, burned 100 cords of wood daily, or, 8,000 cords a year. Later 3 other kilns were built. The last time a kiln was fired up was in 1930, Portland Cement having overtaken the market.

This is an image of a place or building that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places in the United States of America. Its reference number is 79000900.
