Description: Voici un type d’image qui a été très en vogue au XVIe siècle en Flandre, époque à laquelle la mort fascine autant qu’elle effraie. Un ange aux ailes de papillon est placé dans un paysage. Il tient un miroir dans lequel se reflète un crâne. Le crâne est en Occident un symbole de Vanité, il montre la fragilité de la vie humaine. Les inscriptions latines écrites sur le bord du miroir et sur le rouleau qui l’entourent signifient clairement au spectateur que les richesses ou la beauté sont sans importance, et qu’en fin de compte, la mort fauchera tout le monde. La référence au papillon compense le côté pessimiste de l’œuvre. Cet insecte est depuis l’Antiquité un symbole d’immortalité. Dans la religion chrétienne, on l’associe à l’âme, le siège de la pensée. Le chrétien peut donc espérer que son âme survive à la mort physique de son corps. Si on regarde de plus près, un élément étrange attire le regard. Dans le reflet du miroir, derrière le crâne, on peut voir les carreaux d’une fenêtre, alors que l’ange se trouve en extérieur ! On suppose qu’il existait à l’origine un second panneau, placé en regard de cette œuvre, pour former un diptyque. Sur ce panneau devait se trouver le personnage à qui l’ange montre le crâne et qui devait être le commanditaire de l’œuvre. N° d’inventaire : P. 2009
Détail: Un indice nous permet d’en apprendre plus sur le commanditaire : sur le rebord de la fenêtre, une pile de pièces d’or laisse penser que la personne qui a commandé cette œuvre était un marchand ou un banquier.
