The Tybee Island Lighthouse located on Tybee Island at the entrance of the Savannah River is one of seven surviving colonial lighthouses. The first tower was built out of wood (1736) under the direction of George Edward Oglethorpe, the founder of Savannah and the colony of Georgia (1733). Storms, erosion, Civil War, hurricanes damaged the lighthouse over the centuries. Rebuilt and restored, the lighthouse is still functioning as a navigational tool. It has retained the keepers houses and auxiliary buildings and is open to the public.
