Summary

[edit]
Description
English: This lighthouse is 6.1m (20ft) high and 18.3m (60ft) above water level. Built in 1873, situated on a cliff at the mouth of the Walton River, the lighthouse guided ships into the Walton Dock on Pier Road.

The lighting apparatus consisted of two flat-wick kerosene lamps with eighteen inch reflectors and two other lamps with twelve-inch reflectors, arranged to focus the light to the west. Three galvanized iron tanks were used to store the oil for the lamps.

Abraham Pineo Gesner (May 2, 1797 - April 29, 1864) was a Canadian physician and geologist who invented kerosene. Gesner was born in Cornwallis, Nova Scotia. He died in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Walton Harbour Lighthouse was deactivated in 1986. The restored lighthouse and grounds have been developed into an interpretation center.
