Summary
[edit]DescriptionLighthouse, Hoylake - geograph.org.uk - 39778.jpg | Lighthouse, Hoylake. Although not one of the two original lighthouses which were further inland, this folly at Hoylake gives the house a very original feature! HOYLE LAKE, now called Hoylake in its position facing the Irish sea had a deep lagoon or lake, where ships were able to anchor but not always in safety as it had no protection from the prevailing north westerly winds. Its convenience was that ships could unload some of their cargo which would then travel overland across the Wirral Peninsula to Liverpool or the old Roman City of Chester and the ships now lightened would continue their passage on up the River Mersey or the River Dee. |
