Bui Miss Mar-garet Robinson, President of the LightingCommittee, reported thai while some ofthe ratepayers contributed willingly to theLighting scheme, others did not, and thereceipts were insufficient for the carryingout <pf the work during another year. It appears thai the meeting terminatedwithoul any definite arrangements beingmade fr the winter, bo thai the town waspresumably lefl in darkness, bu1 severalof the speakers strongly urged thai publiclighting should come upon the rates. This is evidently ■ case where theenthusiasm oi the few did not overcome the inertia oi the many. The lamp is covered bya Holophane reflector and over this isplaced a Japanese paper shade, the colourof which harmonises with the wall-paper(deep red).
