Text Appearing Before Image:
Times and LongAcre Squares, is probably as highillumina-tion in any square as we have. Thehighest illumination found here was about12 foot candles. This is larger/ due to thestoics and electric siLiis. for after these are extinguished the lighting is much lew. The minimum found was about0*08 foot candles, when all lighting was on. Fifth Avenue, which is comparablein importance with Regenl Street, andreally is more important, has a maximumof about I7 foot candles, at ahoiit 8feet from a post, and a minimum of 0*6— decidedly below that of Regenl Street. It is to l»e noted, however, that thisintense lighting abroad IS cut down at least half at about midnight. This isjustifiable when such powerful illumina-tion is used. In that case, when halfthis lighting is t urned out. what remains is about an average of ours during the entire night. In giving the foot candle measurementsof lighting, it should he stated that * iieywere taken by what may he termed THE ILLUMINATING ENGINEER (june) 289

Views of Mexico City by day and night, showing combination ofcentrally suspended arc lamps and clusters of tungsten lamps inAlba diffusing globes on the pavement. This subdivision of unitsand (use of diffusing globes is characteristic of much Americanstreet lighting. 290 THE ILLUMINATING ENGINEER (jvne) reconnaissance measurements of my ownand compared with accurate observationsfrom detailed surveys given me abroad. The time was too short for me to makeelaborate measurements to establishaverages : the surveys were made to• heck high illumination and get illumina-tion curves between lighting units alongthe street. From this point it will probably beeasier to show you the arrangements andappliances for lighting of these foreignCities by slides, pointing out oneach slide the points of difference. There are a number of night photo-graphs of the lighting. They are of noscientific value and the photographs arenot even comparable as to intensity.but will give you a good idea of the effectof
