Description

De Koninklijke Nederlandse Redding Maatschappij (KNRM) (Royal Netherlands Sea Rescue Institution) is een particuliere stichting voor het verlenen van hulp aan in nood verkerende schepen langs de Nederlandse kust. De Reddingmaatschappijen zijn opgericht in 1824 en vormen onderdeel van het Nederlandse reddingwezen. Aanleiding was een scheepsramp voor de kust van Huisduinen in oktober van dat jaar waarbij drie schipbreukelingen en zes redders het leven lieten. De KNRM steunt volledig op giften van donateurs, nalatenschappen, sponsoring, subsidies en de inzet van ruim 1.300 vrijwillige bemanningen en medewerkers. Zij ontvangt subsidie van de staat. Zij is de klok rond paraat voor het uitvoeren van search-and-rescue- en andere hulpverleningstaken op het water in opdracht van de Kustwacht: 24 uur per dag, alle dagen van het jaar.
